My research on Rwanda

What did Rwanda’s Gacaca courts leave behind for reconciliation? That is the question at the heart of my master’s thesis.

Master’s thesis

The Long-Term Legacy of the Gacaca Community Courts on Reconciliation in Post-Genocide Rwanda
Degree
M.A. Human Rights and Democracy, University College Stockholm
Fieldwork
Kigali, Rwanda, with Never Again Rwanda, January to March 2027

What I am looking at

My thesis asks what the Gacaca community courts have meant for reconciliation in Rwanda over the long term: what they contributed, and where they fell short.

Who I am speaking with

I will be interviewing people who worked inside Gacaca, such as judges and coordinators, and people from civil society and peacebuilding organisations. I want to hear, from those who know it best, what Gacaca achieved and what its limitations were.

I am not interviewing survivors. My interviews are with practitioners only.

Fieldwork in Kigali

From January to March 2027 I will be in Kigali, doing my fieldwork with Never Again Rwanda.

If you worked with Gacaca, or work on transitional justice and peacebuilding, I would be glad to hear from you through my contact page.
